A failed Messenger message can be caused by a connection/app problem, the conversation’s availability or an account restriction. An error alone does not establish that Meta is censoring you or that another person has blocked you. Work through the visible evidence before making changes.
Check whether sending fails everywhere
- Record the exact message and whether it affects one conversation or all of them. Check that you are using the expected account.
- Update Messenger through your device’s official app store.
- Use a reliable network, check available device storage, then close the app and restart the device.
- Try a short message in an existing conversation with someone you know. Avoid repeatedly resending a large attachment while a send remains pending.
Meta’s sending-problem guidance recommends app, network, storage and restart checks. A simple-message comparison can help distinguish an attachment issue from a wider sending failure.
Look at conversation and account limits
Meta lists recent high message volume and Community Standards violations among reasons for temporary sending restrictions. Read any notice shown in the app and follow its own review or waiting instructions. There is no guaranteed universal waiting time.
A recipient’s deactivated/deleted account, a block or changes in a group conversation can also affect communication. Do not repeatedly contact someone through alternate accounts to bypass a block. A failure in one conversation is a reason to check that conversation, not proof of any particular cause.
Report a reproducible app problem
Use the reporting route linked from Meta’s Messenger troubleshooting hub. Include the error text, app/device versions, approximate time and the checks that changed the result. Exclude private chat contents and verification codes from public posts.
Protect encrypted chat history
Reinstallation and secure-storage changes are separate from ordinary send troubleshooting. Meta warns that deleting secure storage permanently deletes its encrypted chat-history backup. Do not delete that storage just to test a connection. Before any disruptive app change, confirm that you understand your chat-recovery method and can sign back in.
