Change Your Facebook Name: Profile Selection, Name Rules and Waiting Limits

Sources checked: 12 October 2026.

Changing the name displayed on your Facebook profile is different from changing its username or web address. Confirm which field you want to update before saving, particularly if several profiles are connected to your account.

Change the profile name

  1. Open Facebook using the profile you want to edit, then open Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. In the Accounts Center interface, open Profiles, select the relevant account/profile and choose Name.
  3. Enter the name you use, select Review change, check the spelling and presentation, then save through the displayed confirmation.

Meta’s name-change instructions describe this flow. Accounts Center may appear as Meta Account during the gradual 2026 account-settings rollout; follow the current profile-name controls if your labels differ. Meta’s account-settings guide explains that some profile settings can still be managed individually.

Check the rules before confirming

Facebook’s name guidance says to use the first and last name you identify with in everyday life. Avoid unusual capitalization, random words or unsupported characters. A name change normally prevents another change for 60 days, so a rushed spelling mistake may not be immediately reversible.

If Meta asks you to confirm the name, use only its official process and the accepted-document guidance it displays. Do not send identity documents to a third party offering to change the name for you. This site cannot approve exceptions or shorten a platform waiting period.

If you meant to change the profile link

A username controls the profile URL and is a separate setting. Meta’s username guide explains its permitted characters and warns that an old username may not be reclaimable. A username change can also affect the associated Messenger link or a connected profile where information is synchronized.

After changing a display name, check your profile from the intended account. Review any connected-profile scope shown before making another change. If the control is unavailable, read the reason in Facebook’s help flow rather than repeatedly submitting different names.
