Set up an existing @verizon.net mailbox according to the provider that hosts it now. Verizon’s retired-email FAQ identifies AOL and Yahoo support routes. First confirm that your mailbox opens in that provider’s webmail; iPhone settings cannot fix an account you cannot access online.
Use iPhone’s provider sign-in flow
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts on a current iPhone.
- Select Add Account and enter your complete @verizon.net address.
- Choose the actual hosting provider from the list if prompted. Do not select a provider solely because the address contains the word Verizon.
- Follow that provider’s sign-in and verification prompts, then use Next or Save as shown.
Apple’s current Mail setup guide documents automatic and manual setup. Menu labels can differ on older iOS versions. Use the guide for your device instead of following a legacy Verizon server recipe.
If manual setup is required
Get the current incoming/outgoing server settings from the actual provider first. Apple directs users to their provider when those values are unknown. Do not guess the hostnames or turn off encrypted connections to get past a warning.
For AOL-hosted mail in a third-party app that does not use AOL’s own branded sign-in screen, AOL documents app passwords. Create one in your AOL account-security page if required for the chosen client, and enter it only in that trusted app. It is a credential, not a code to share with a technician.
Check the result without losing mail
Send a small test message to an address you control and reply to it. Confirm that new incoming mail appears both in webmail and in iPhone Mail. Note whether receiving, sending or both fail; that distinction helps identify the relevant settings.
Keep your existing mail copies before removing an account from the phone. If provider sign-in also fails, use the official provider recovery route for AOL rather than repeatedly editing Mail. A working app setup does not restore data that the provider no longer holds.
