Gmail not syncing on Android or iPhone: a focused checklist

Check whether the problem affects the Gmail app or the mailbox itself. Open the same account in a computer browser. If new mail is also absent there, an app refresh setting is unlikely to be the whole problem. If browser mail is current, work through the appropriate phone checklist below.

Start with a refresh and a connection check

Swipe down from the top of the Gmail inbox to refresh it. Google notes that synchronization may take time, especially after a device has been unused. Confirm that another website loads, update Gmail from the official app store and restart the device if necessary. Test after each change.

Android: check the relevant account

  1. In Gmail, open Menu, then Settings and select the account that is failing.
  2. Under Data usage, confirm Sync Gmail is enabled.
  3. Review the device’s Google Account synchronization settings and use Sync now if available. Android menu locations differ by manufacturer.
  4. Check both Google Account storage and free storage on the phone.

Google Account storage is shared across services such as Gmail, Drive and Photos. A full account can stop incoming and outgoing mail. Phone storage and cloud storage are different: making room in one does not necessarily free space in the other.

iPhone and iPad: background refresh and sync range

For the Gmail app, Apple Settings has General, then Background App Refresh. Ensure Gmail is allowed when you want background updates. In Gmail’s Settings, the General section includes Data usage and Sync settings, where you can choose how many days of messages to synchronize.

The sync range is a history window, not a promise that mail arrives only once every few days. This Gmail-app setting is separate from Apple Mail’s fetch schedule. Use the help for the app you are actually opening.

If only notifications are missing

Open Gmail and see whether the message is already present. If it is, investigate notification settings rather than deleting the account or assuming mail was not delivered. Note whether one account or every account is affected.

Avoid destructive fixes too early

Google lists clearing Gmail data on Android as a later step after other checks fail, and warns that drafts and app settings can be erased. Save important drafts first and follow the official instructions if you reach that point. Do not clear data simply because a refresh is taking longer than expected.

If a Yahoo or Outlook account inside Gmail is affected while Gmail itself works, test that provider’s webmail. Its authentication or delivery problem needs the provider’s own guidance. Capture the exact error and app/device version before requesting help.
