Gmail attachments will not download: checks that preserve security

First decide whether the attachment has no download option, the download fails, or the downloaded file will not open. Those are different problems. This guide covers Gmail in a computer browser; it does not require obsolete Gmail Labs settings or a third-party repair utility.

Check confidential mode and warnings

When the sender uses confidential mode, Gmail prevents downloading or copying the message and attachments. That is an intended restriction. Ask the sender whether they can share the necessary information another permitted way; browser changes will not remove the restriction.

If Gmail warns that the message or attachment is suspicious, do not download it to see what happens. Confirm the request with the sender through a contact method you already trust. Avoid opening unknown programs or scripts received by email.

Download a normal attachment

Open the message and use the attachment’s download control. Inline photographs may be displayed inside the message rather than as separate attachment cards. Check the browser’s download list and destination folder before clicking several times; the file may already have downloaded.

If an ordinary download fails

  1. Use a current browser supported by Gmail.
  2. Check whether another harmless attachment in the same account downloads.
  3. Try an alternative browser to separate an account/file problem from a browser problem.
  4. Review extensions that affect downloads. If needed, disable one relevant extension and retry, then restore it when it is not the cause.
  5. Save unfinished work, then clear browser cache and cookies only if necessary. Be prepared to sign in again.

Check free disk space and any browser download warning as well. Do not switch off antivirus, firewall or safe-browsing protections. A private window can be a comparison test, but some extensions can be allowed there, so it does not prove every extension is absent.

If the file opens incorrectly

A completed download needs an application that supports its file type. If the file is damaged or unexpected, ask the sender to verify the original or supply a supported format. Do not change its extension to bypass a restriction.

When reporting a persistent issue, record the exact warning, browser version, file type and whether the failure affects one file or many. Remove private message content from screenshots. For a workplace account, your administrator may control additional restrictions, so use your organization’s help route for those policies.
